We have a lot of 74 in the company and these work well with the TB16 (at least in this regard). securely to a range of USB accessories and external displays, while rapid charging support and a mirrored power button make it easy to undock and go. If thats right than this is a major design flaw of Dell and there should be some actions made. But because it's so far away its not capable of cooling it. I already read somewhere that the fan spinns up because of a temp-sensor right in that area and triggers the fan. Only the upper left corner where the Thunderbolt connector is located. Strange enough though the right bottom of the Notebook is actually pretty cool.

The fans spin full speed as soon as you plugin the TB16 dock and dont stop doing this until you undock. We currently have around 800 of the above mentioned combination. You’ll hear that fan spinning, even when your notebook is silent.I am working in the IT-Departmant of a large company. Speaking of devices under heavy load: Buyers should be aware that the TB16 has got a fan and does need to be actively cooled. The connection appears to be dead and is only resolved by unplugging the keyboard and plugging it in again.

At time’s, when I’m running multiple applications such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro and the XPS 15 is struggling, my keyboard (attached via one of the USB 2.0 ports to the TB16) loses its connection. Unlike the other docks, this has no moving parts, no fans. That was the idea, the contract that docking stations committed to. There were no special drivers, no special setup - just plug it in. Usually you undock, do your thing, and then dock your laptop and the peripherals work. I haven’t read of anyone else experiencing this, so it could just be mine. We originally purchased a TB16 dock for use with the newer Dell laptops like the Latitude 74xx and up series, and the newer XPS models. My TB16 has a rather strange quirk when my XPS 15 is under heavy load.

One such update somehow disabled all the USB ports on my TB16, rendering it useless for more than a week. In the past there has been a lack of quality control when it comes to updates and I would definitely recommend checking out the Dell forums before every BIOS update. I work primarily in a VM, and I dock and undock all the time. In case it's not clear from all the technical descriptions, this is a really impactful issue. but when I redock the laptop the switchport still says unauthorized and the laptop has full access to the network. Same issue on Dell Latitude 7490 with TB16 Thunderbolt Dock. My TB16 runs as expected for the most parts. When I undock a laptop from an authenticated port the port returns to unauthorized as it should. My XPS 15 (9560) is well known to have a rather shoddy WiFi card (which could be replaced), thanks to the TB16’s ethernet I’m finally connected to the network without any dropouts.Īs mentioned, Dell has seemingly had a few issues with previous Thunderbolt docks.
